Starlink vs cellular failover for business backup
Cellular failover is usually simpler and cheaper to install for a storefront with good signal. Starlink is the stronger choice where cellular coverage is weak or towers are likely to go down in the same storm. Some businesses use both.
Cellular (LTE/5G) failover
- Pros: small indoor/outdoor router, quick install, automatic switchover, works well for POS traffic.
- Cons: performance depends on local signal and tower congestion. Towers may lose power in long grid outages.
Starlink
- Pros: independent of local wired and cellular networks; high throughput where the sky is clear.
- Cons: needs a dish with an unobstructed view; mounting on leased buildings may need landlord approval. Heavy rain can degrade service.
- Plans and hardware cost: TODO (needs verified source): Starlink business pricing; check starlink.com/us/service-plans/business in a browser
How to decide
- Test cellular signal at the register location on more than one carrier.
- Check whether you can mount a dish with a clear view of the sky.
- Compare total yearly cost against your outage cost estimate.
