Backup internet FAQ
What is backup internet?
A second, independent internet connection, usually cellular, satellite, or a second wired line, that takes over automatically when your main connection fails.
Will my POS work during an internet outage without a backup?
It depends on the vendor. Many cloud POS systems offer a limited offline mode for card payments, with time and amount limits. Check your vendor’s documentation.
Is a second cable line a good backup?
Only if it doesn’t share the same failure points. Lines from different providers can still run on the same poles. Cellular or satellite takes a more independent path.
Is Starlink or cellular better for backup?
Cellular is usually simpler where signal is good. Starlink is better where cellular is weak and you can mount a dish with a clear view of the sky.
Does backup internet work in a power outage?
Only if the router, modem, and POS have power. Use a UPS. Cell towers may also lose power in long grid outages.
