Backup internet for restaurants
A restaurant outage hits more than the card reader. Online orders, delivery-app tablets, kitchen display systems, and handheld ordering devices can all stop at once. A backup connection should cover the POS network and the order tablets.
What goes down
- Cloud POS and handhelds (offline mode limits vary by vendor; see the checklist)
- Third-party delivery tablets (orders may be missed or auto-cancelled)
- Kitchen display systems that route tickets over the network
- Guest Wi-Fi (low priority; keep it off the backup to save data)
Setup tips
- Put the POS and order tablets on the failover router. Leave guest Wi-Fi on the main line only.
- Check the backup's data allowance against your peak-hour transaction volume.
- Test during a slow period, not a Friday night.
